Native American Movies

Native Americans, also known as American Indians, have often been the "bad guys" in movies. The good cowboys go out and slaughter the bad Indians. Alternately, in movies that feature a Native American character, that character is often either a stereotypical "silent tracker" type or a heavy drinker who needs help. It's only a few movies that portray a more balanced look at the intricate life of the Native American.

A modern tale of life on a reservation.

Dances With Wolves - 1990
Despite its flaws, Kevin Costner did a reasonably good job portraying the Lakota culture in this top-100 film. The movie brought the beauty of the language and the sweeping landscapes to a large audience, and spurred an interest in Native American cultures.

The Doe Boy - 2001
A hemophiliac boy who is also half white, half Native American struggles to grow to manhood.
